Title: Study of the NMR solid echo in hcp D[sub 2]. [NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance)]

Miscellaneous ·
OSTI ID:7003536

A study of the NMR solid echoes formed by a two-pulse RF sequence for both the I = 1 and I = 2 nuclear spins in hcp D[sub 2] is presented. The concentration of para-D[sub 2] was between 0.06 and 0.5 and the temperature was between 0.06K and 1.5K. A density matrix theory previously developed for the I = 1 solid echo in H[sub 2] is applied to the I = 1 echo of p-D[sub 2] and is seen to account for most of the observed properties. In the absence of a complete density matrix theory for the I = 2 echoes of o-D[sub 2], the same analysis performed for the I = 1 echoes was repeated on the I = 2 echoes. Measurements of the various quantities associated with the echo amplitude decay as a function of [tau] (the time between the two RF pulses) are presented. These include the echo amplitude ratio S(I=1)/S(I=2), the intermolecular nuclear dipolar interaction magnitude, the local inhomogeneous field distribution. Studies of the dependence of the echo amplitudes as functions of RF pulse widths are presented. The departure of the I = 1 echo amplitude from Curie's law dependence seen in previous work is confirmed and discussed. The absence of the expected I = 2 satellite echoes is reported. The results of this study are compared to a similar study on solid H[sub 2].
