Trying low-wall stripping and cast-blasting, too

Many mines find that they incur more rehandle than is economically sound. This is true in the Hanna Basin area of Wyoming, where low-sulfur coal lies in multiple dipping seams. Such seams bring about sophisticated techniques, among which are stripping from the low wall (spoil side), coupled with cast blasting. One mine that reports success with a combination of low-wall dragline stripping and cast blasting is the Medicine Bow mine, northwest of Hanna in southern Wyoming. The mine, operated by a joint venture of Arch Mineral Corp. and Rocky Mountain Energy, lies in an area characterized by high plains with flat to gently rolling surfaces. The two pits at the mine strip four, and in some areas five, bands of coal, all in the Ferris Formation.
