A study was carried out on the kinetics of the heterogeneous reduction of potassium sulfate (50 micro mean particle size) by hydrogen at 1033-1073/sup 0/K in a quartz flow reactor at atmospheric pressure. Measurements were carried out for the temperatures of the gas flow and sample and the condensed phase and exit gases were subjected to chemical analysis. The reduction products are liquid potassium sulfide, potassium polysulfides, and potassium hydroxide and gaeous water and hydrogen sulfide. Two mechanistic variants were proposed for the reduction of potassium sulfate by hydrogen. The initial product above 1033 /sup 0/K is potassium sulfide while potassium sulfide, which is formed from the sulfate below 1033/sup 0/K, is bound in the K/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ /SUP ./ 3K/sub 2/S complex such that the major primary product becomes potassium disulfide K/sub 2/S/sub 2/. Hydrogen sulfide is formed as a result of the reaction of K/sub 2/S with H/sub 2/O and K/sub 2/S/sub 2/ with H/sub 2/.
