Title: Apparatus comprising a turbine and associated water extractor and method of translating the potential energy of deep sea water into useful work

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7000029

An apparatus is described for extracting fluid from a depressurized vessel comprising a closed tank adapted to contain a water level and a relatively large air cushion at low pressure the tank having two openings formed in opposed wall portions thereof below the level of the fluid, one of the openings defining a port opening, an external tank extension circumscribing the port opening and including valve means, valving the port opening, the tank extension having valve means, a fluid extracting means slidably mounted to reciprocate through the openings transversely of the tank and associated extension between a retracted and protracted position, and a displacement cage associated with the tank extension and relative reciprocating movement with the extraction means and the tank extension, the displacement cage having valving means complementing the valve means of the tank extension, actuating means operatively connected to each of the respective valve means to co-ordinate the opening and closing of the valve means in a predetermined sequence so as to effect the extraction of the fluid from the tank to the exterior thereof, and means for effecting the drive of the fluid extracting means between the protracted and retracted position.
