Among the most promising additives with antifriction effect are oil-soluble compounds of molybdenum, including molybdenum-containing dithiophosphates. This paper reports on a study of the functional properties of these additives in mineral oil. It is shown that the molydenum-containing dialkyl- and bis (alkylphenyl) dithiophosphates manifest antifriction properties in mineral oils. The best antifriction properties are shown by the additive based on the alkylphenol, which has a substantial advantage in that the coefficient of friction does not increase within a range of temperatures from 20 to 300 C. In combination with an ashless nitrogen-containing dithiophosphate, this additive can be used to reduce friction and wear in motor oils.
