Federal government and Washington state officials completed negotiations on October 1 that will effect significant changes to the Hanford Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order (also called the Hanford Tri-Party Agreement or TPA), established in 1989 among the US Department of Energy, the Washington Department of Ecology, and the US Environmental Protection Agency. The new tentative agreement - it will not be final until review and comment by the public - calls for greater emphasis on transforming hazardous and radioactive tank waste into a solid, safer, more stable form; protection of the Columbia River; aggressive schedules to tackle the greatest risks first; and reducing expected cleanup costs at Hanford by $1 billion over the next five years.
