The effect of a 1-D diaphragm in the form of a thin cylindrical filament on transverse-mode generation in a ring laser is studied experimentally. Transverse-mode generation in a strong field in the presence of a 1-D diaphragm is described theoretically in the framework of a balance equation and distributed losses; inserted diffraction losses are calculated in the approximation of an opaque strip in the limit of geometric optics. Good agreement between experimental and theoretical results allows us to determine gain and initial losses in a laser, and also cylinder diameter (width of the strip) without the effect of the refractive index.
