The Ninth World Forestry Congress was held in Mexico City in July 1985. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization collaborated with Mexico to sponsor the Congress. Never in history have forests given such great benefits to so many, yet never has the survival of forests been so threatened was the key theme of the conference. It drew 2200 people from 102 countries. It urged all nations to recognize the importance of forest resources for the biosphere and the survival of humanity and to devote themselves to safeguarding and promoting this resource. To achieve these goals, a sweeping prescription of 14 new world policies and strategies is recommended.
