Pacific outer northern and central California lease sale/May 14, 1963

Book ·
OSTI ID:6992137
This is the most recent report summarizing the leasing and drilling history, geology, and hydrocarbon potential of the northern and central California Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). The blocks nominated for lease in 1963 total 900,000 acres and were located offshore Eel River sedimentary basin; Point Arena and Bodega basins; southern Bodega, La Honda, and Ano Nuevo basins; and offshore Santa Maria basin. Twenty exploratory wells were drilled between 1963 and 1967. Indications of hydrocarbons were encountered in most of the wells in three of the basins, but at that time none of the shows were considered to be of commercial quality. The economic climate for heavy sour crude oil, combined with high development and transportation costs, imposed severe limitations on possible development. Improvements in the hydrocarbon price structure and drilling and production technologies since then have dramatically changed oil industry attitudes toward the hydrocarbon development potential of the Pacific OCS. The 1963 lease sale and subsequent exploration helped define the more promising areas for future consideration. Stratigraphic correlation charts of all wells drilled on the lease are included.
