In this paper, some conceptual problems for the interpretation of osp (1/2) as a spectrum generating algebra for the bosonic harmonic oscillator are resolved using quantum groups. The authors show that in place of the superalgebra osp (1/2) one may work equivalently with its bosonization, bosp (1/2), which the authors introduce. It is a quantum group and provides a purely bosonic spectrum generating algebra for the harmonic oscillator. The construction is extended to include the q-deformed situation also.
