Temperature-programmed desorption was used to study the reaction of nitric oxide with cobalt catalysts on ..gamma..-A1/sub 2/O/sub 3/ (1-10 wt.%). The desorption of nitric oxide and its decomposition products is observed at from 333/sup 0/ to 973/sup 0/K as three or four peaks. The amount of adsorbed NO and the mechanism for its decomposition on cobalt catalysts depends on the concentration, valence state and coordination of cobalt. The maximum adsorption of nitric oxide and its decomposition to given nitrogen requires the presence of divalent cobalt ions in the catalyst.
