Since the pioneering works of Zadeh and Mamdani and Assilian the conventional fuzzy logic controller has been successfully implemented in many industrial applications As the number of system variables increase, the number of rules in a conventional complete rule set increases exponentially The concept of hierarchical rule set is proposed here such that the number of rules constituting the fuzzy controller will increase linearly (not exponentially) with the number of system variables The purpose of this paper is two fold: (1) to summarize some of the recent and relevant results of the hierarchical rule set and (2) to describe the application of this hierarchical structure for the design of a fuzzy logic controller to a steam generator feedwater flow. 5 refs., 2 figs.
