Two-photon spectroscopy of singlet autoionizing levels of atomic sulfur

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. A; (United States)
Two-photon excitation from the /sup 1/D/sub 2/ level of atomic sulfur was used to probe the previously unobserved, even-parity singlet levels in the region between the two lowest ionization thresholds. Several new Rydberg series were observed and assigned to the (/sup 2/D/sup 0/)np and (/sup 2/D/sup 0/)nf configurations. Although these levels are energetically allowed to autoionize into the /sup 4/S/sup 0/+e/sup -/ continuum, autoionization is forbidden within LS coupling, resulting in very narrow linewidths.
