The mere presence of H{sub 2}S in a wet oil or gas system may cause either weight loss corrosion or sulfide stress cracking (SSC) of carbon and low-alloy steels. In addition, H{sub 2}S may enhance chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of stainless steels and other higher alloys. The likelihood that these phenomena will occur depends on the severity of the environment. This paper deals primarily with sulfide SSC.
