Analysis of underground pipelines for seismic wave propagation

The simplified procedure for the seismic analysis of underground pipelines is investigated through its underlaying assumptions. The first assumption is that the pipeline and the soil move together. A beam on elastic foundation model indicates that slippage between the pipe and the soil occurs during strong earthquakes. It is concluded however that, unless that maximum value of the slippage force is known accurately, this assumption is conservative and appropriate. The second assumption is that the ground displacement may be modeled as a traveling wave with a shape that remains constant as it traverses the pipeline. Using ground motions recorded during the 1971 San Fernando earthquake, it is shown that this assumption is unconservative when the effective propagation velocity of the seismic waves with respect to the pipeline is such that the actual time lag, separation distance between points divided by apparent propagation velocity, is less than a cross over time lag. In this context, methods to calculate the apparent propagation velocity of seismic waves are reviewed. An attempt to characterize the strain behavior due to different frequency components is made. The observed strains are found to be adequately modeled by a Rayleigh wave model. The methodology is extended for the case of vertical shafts.
