The anti pp yields anti lambda lambda reaction near threshold

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6988116
Measurements of differential and integrated cross sections as well as final state polarizations for the anti p p ..-->.. anti ..lambda.. ..lambda.. reaction are presented. The reaction was studied at two incident antiproton momenta (1476.5 MeV/c and 1507.5 MeV/c) corresponding to total center of mass energies of 15.5 MeV and 26.4 MeV above the reaction threshold. The trajectories of charged decay products of the anti ..lambda.. and ..lambda.. were observed in a multiwire proportional chamber and in two sets of drift chambers. The data were analyzed with a computer program which reconstructed anti p p ..-->.. anti ..lambda.. ..lambda.. ..-->.. anti p ..pi../sup +/p..pi../sup -/ events and performed kinematic fitting. The results are compared to several recent meson exchange calculations, and a one-gluon exchange calculation. The experiment was performed at the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN. The data presented represent the first results of the PS185 collaboration's study of the threshold production of hyperon-antihyperon states.
