Geographic information systems present an excellent environment for integrating many symbolic and image database manipulation techniques. Traditional GIS methods have relied on vector form for representing spatial data, but recent advances in image interpretation and symbolic manipulation are paving the way for sophisticated systems using a combination of raster and object/vector form. Systems are now being designed that make extensive use of image processing, pattern recognition, and artificial intelligence techniques. The authors report on their effort toward the design of a paper-map-based query-processing system takes advantage of such trends.
