Secrets of a centrifugal compressor
Several design innovations in Ingersoll-Rand Co.'s new Centregal line of one-, two-, and three-barrel, gas-turbine-driven centrifugal compressors make it the most advanced system of its kind - a compact, high-pressure-ratio compressor that is highly reliable in the tough environments encountered in oil and gas production. Ideal for offshore gas-reinjection applications as well as gas-gathering, natural gas storage, air-separation, and gas-processing operations, the Centregal compressor houses multiple compressor casings within a single, unified structure, thus eliminating the coupling-alignment problem encountered in the traditional series approach toward casing connection while also significantly reducing the unit's overall length. This mechanical structure allows a single-input shaft and a gear train that optimizes the rotating speed of each rotor. Other major innovations include a polygon-fit impeller mounting, electron-beam-welded impeller covers, and a dry gas seal in place of bearing oil.
