Title: Site characterization of Area 6, Dover Air Force Base, in support of natural attenuation and enhanced anaerobic bioremediation projects. Remediation technologies development forum, bioremediation of chlorinated solvents work group

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:698665

A field program for site characterization of targeted study areas at the Dover Air Force Base was conducted between January 16, 1995, and March 9, 1995. The stated objectives of the investigation, `to characterize the stratigraphy, depth to groundwater, groundwater flow directions, and the vertical and horizontal distribution of contaminants within the accelerated anaerobic biodegradation test plot and the intrinsic bioremediation test plot,` were accomplished in a phased approach. The site stratigraphy was characterized based on the interpretation and correlation of recent cone penetrometer technology (CPT) logs with existing well logs. Depth to water and aerial groundwater flow directions across the study area were determined from contoured water-level measurements in new piezometers and existing monitor wells. The extent of contamination, both vertical and horizontal, was determined based on `StrataProbe` groundwater sampling and laboratory analysis for selected target constituents. This report summarizes the work conducted, describes the details of the effort, and reports the conclusions. The activity portion of this report is divided into sections corresponding to the three phases of the fieldwork described in the work plan: CPT logging, soil and groundwater sampling, and piezometer installation.
