As an alternative to isolating high level radioactive waste in a geologically stable storage formation, we investigated the transmutation of the minor actinide and fission products using spallation neutrons from a subcritical assembly. Using a small power accelerator with a slightly subcritical fast neutron assembly, we might use minor actinides to improve fuel economy as well as to mitigate the problem of reactor safety. Transmutation of fission products using the (n,alpha) reaction requires a substantial amount of energy. To reduce the energy requirements, it is possible to use the subcritical assembly in which neutrons created by the spallation reaction are multiplied.
