US and Russia broadly expand science and technology cooperation

The US and Russia agreed late last month to spur cooperation in a broad variety of science- and technology-related programs. The two countries signed agreements boosting collaboration in such areas as basic sciences and engineering, space, biomedical research, environmental protection, nuclear disarmament, energy, and geosciences during a visit to the US by Russian Prime Minister Viktor S. Chernomyrdin. The accords were signed in Washington, DC, at the third meeting of the US-Russian Joint Commission on Economic Technological Cooperation.
