  1. Battelle Memorial Institute, Columbus, OH (United States)
Nuclear research activities performed since 1943 at Battelle Memorial Institute under the sponsorship of the federal government have resulted in varying degrees of contamination of 15 privately owned Battelle sites in central Ohio. Remedial decontamination and decommissioning (D D) activities are required to restore these facilities for use or release without radiological restrictions. Based on the volume of radioactive material processed in the performance of government work, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) accepted responsibility for 90% of this D D effort. The D D effort has been designated the Battelle Columbus Laboratories Decommissioning Project (BCLDP). The project was initiated in 1987.
