  1. Dept. of Energy, Washington, DC (United States)
The US Department of Energy (DOE) is experiencing many safeguards policy and technical challenges. These are a result of weapons reduction, reconfiguration and modernization, and facility transition activities. The direction of DOE safeguards now and in the future will be largely influenced by these many domestic and international challenges. Early protection strategies within the department emphasized the use of physical protection to counter outsider threat. More recently, protection strategies have included increased consideration of insider threat. Safeguards at DOE facilities in the future will include the application of current and newly developed safeguards technologies, concepts, and approaches. Total protection programs also must utilize the latest safeguards technologies for not only controlling and accounting for nuclear materials but also other systems for protecting proprietary information, national security information, and assets as well.
