The chlorination of aromatic compounds adsorbed on fly ash surfaces by hydrogen chloride: Experimental evidence for environmental contamination by waste incineration

OSTI ID:6984925

This paper summarizes an investigation to determine if simple aromatic hydrocarbons underwent chemical transformation to chlorinated dioxins, chlorinated hydrocarbons and other compounds on fly ash from municipal incinerators. The gas-solid phase reactions of naphthalene on fly ash with HCL(g) were examined first. GC and GC/MS techniques were used to analyze the products. Experimental results are presented.
