The potential of plowshare for resource development

Journal Article · · Pet. Abstr.; (United States)
Project Plowshare was established in July 1975 at the University of California Lawrence Livermore Laboratory to investigate the industrial uses of nuclear explosives. The potential applications which appear to be economically attractive when compared with conventional technology included the use of nuclear cavities for underground storage of natural gas and hydrocarbon liquids, stimulation of natural gas reservoirs by rock breakage, in-situ production of shale oil, and chemical mining of deeply buried deposits of copper ore. The most simple and straightforward application is that of storage, but no U.S. experiments have been conducted for this specific purpose. The cratering experiments which were conducted and possible industrial applications of nuclear cratering are summarized.
