The Atlantic Wood Industries, Inc. 50-acre site is the location of a wood processing plant which used pentachlorophenol and creosote in its process. The environmental contamination on-site consists of naphthalene (46 ppm), phenol (3.1 ppm), phenanthrene (316 ppm), and pentachlorophenol (13 ppm) in groundwater; and pentachlorophenol (15,000 ppm), phenanthrene (56,000 ppm), naphthalene (1,450 ppm), and phenol (5.1 ppm) in soil. The site is considered to be of potential public health concern because of the risk to human health caused by the possibility of exposure to hazardous substances via surface water, soil, sediment, and air.
