Journal Article · · World Coal; (United States)
OSTI ID:6984272

Coal takes a dominating position in Australia's overseas trade. It represents more than 10 percent of Australian export income, amounting to about A $1,400,000,000 in 1977. About half the coal produced in Australia is for export; exports reached a record 36,000,000 tons in 1977. This was 2,000,000 tons more than in 1976, a remarkable achievement given the state of the world economy. On the domestic side, coal meets 39 percent of Australian energy demand. It provides between 70 and 80 percent of the country's electric power, and meets all the needs of the steel industry. It also provides a fuel source for several other major industries.
