OSTI ID:6984259

The Saunders Supply Company (SSC) is an active wood treating facility encompassing 3.5 acres in Chuckatuck (Suffolk County), Virginia. Waste sludge from the wood-treating operation was burned on-site and has contaminated groundwater. On-site contaminants of concern include pentachlorophenol (PCP), dioxins and furans, chromium and arsenic. Site-related contaminants have been detected in a surface reservoir that serves Suffolk City. Off-site contaminants of concern included chromium, arsenic, lead, and aluminum. There is a potential for human exposure from site-related contaminants both on-site and off-site. On-site soil contain concentrations of PCP, PAHs, total dioxins and furans, and TCDD equivalents that are of potential health concern. Groundwater is another exposure pathway that poses a potential public health threat. Surface water sampling results from the reservoir have demonstrated lead and chromium at levels of health concern. However, finished water from the reservoir were well below the Maximum Contaminant Levels, according to the superintendent of Suffolk Water Treatment Plant.
