In response to the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) of 1980 and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA), the Analytical Operation Branch (AOB) of the Hazardous Site Evaluation Division of the Office of Emergency and Remedial Response of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has developed Statements of Work (SOWs) for the analyses of organic and inorganic constituents in multi-media and at varying concentration levels as part of administering the Contract laboratory Program (CLP). The CLP provides analytical support services to Superfund and other US EPA programs. The SOWs address standardized analytical procedures, quality assurance/quality control, contract required quantitation limits, reporting requirements, and timeliness of data reporting. SOWs have been used in the CLP since its conception in 1980. In fact, the AOB has compiled numerous SOWs for the analysis of soil and water matrices since 1980, but it was not until December 1991 that the AOB compiled a draft SOW for the analysis of air samples acquired during Superfund investigations, titled ``Statement-of-Work for Analysis of Air Toxics at Superfund Sites`` (draft SOW).
