Liquid cooled fiber thermal radiation receiver
This patent describes a solar energy absorbing thermal receiver apparatus of rectangular elongate orientation maintained by a support stand and having inlet and outlet ports on opposite ends thereof. The receiver includes a support plate having bores for transmitting thermal energy, the receiver adapted to operate within a temperature range of 100/sup 0/-1200/sup 0/C. and at a 10 sun or greater solar energy density; the thermal receiver comprising: an array of blackened, closely-spaced, small-diameter fibers for capturing incident solar radiation striking a side of the receiver. The array has an orientation adapted to govern the absorption of solar energy by the receiver, the array having a predetermined configuration and density; a transparent molten salt for collecting incident solar radiation captured by the fibers, the collecting action adapted to cool the fibers as solar energy is removed, the molten salt having a low vapor pressure; and means for transferring the solar energy disposed within the salt to the outlet port, the direction thereof being through the array of fibers and the bores disposed within the support plate to the outlet port.
