The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that 100% state participation was achieved for the first time in its gas pipeline safety program in 1976, with $1.65 million in grant-in-aid funds going out to support state safety programs. Despite this strengthening of the gas pipeline safety effort, 1579 failure incidents occurred during 1976, causing 63 deaths and 366 injuries. Serious third-party damage to buried gas lines continues to be the cause of most failure incidents.
