  1. Eaglebrook Plastics, Chicago, IL (United States)
Every day, a procession of trucks arrives at Eaglebrook Plastics' 250,000-square-foot post-consumer recycling plant in Chicago, delivering millions of pounds per month of baled commingled plastic bottles, numbers 1--7, hauled from some 400 waste collection agencies and municipalities in the region and beyond. In the past decade, the Eaglebrook group of companies, which was formed in 1983, has processed over 200 million pounds of plastics, the equivalent of 2 billion 1-gallon milk bottles. To make all this work efficiently, a number of problems--particularly concerning sorting and keeping the production line running smoothly--have had to be solved.
