Title: Electricity from solar ponds

Journal Article · · CHEMTECH; (United States)
OSTI ID:6980171

The design and operation of solar-pond power plants begun 20 years ago in Israel are described. Such systems offer the advantages of high reliability, low maintenance requirements, the self-cleaning capability of the ponds, and environmental compatability. The working fluids employed for the turbogenerators are generally fluorinated or chlorinated hydrocarbons and aeromatics. Practical efficiencies achieved are between 50-70 % of the Carnot efficiency. The unit step size is on the order of 20-50 mw and the total installed capacity can be increased exactly as demand grows. 9 refs.
