A dynamic model of the real power dispatch of thermal units is adopted as the basic framework of some automatic procedures appliable in modern energy management systems at the different time scales of the control problem. The dynamic model is able to include constraints on the rate of change of the MW output, limitations on the integral fuel consumption imposed either by environmental constraints or by fuel shortage, together with the usual security constraints of the static approach. The applicability of the dynamic model in very short term activities (advance dispatch phase) demands high speed of computation because the continuously changing load system scenario, provided by the on-line state estimation and load forecast (f. i. executed every 5 minutes), requires frequent updatings of the generation trajectories and participation factors. By means of tests on the italian EHV system, a suitably modified gradient projection algorithm implemented by the authors is shown to possess the required characteristics of speed and large-scale applicability.
