This patent describes a method for producing silicon carbide particles. It comprises providing finely divided silica; providing finely divided carbon; admixing the particles of silica and carbon to form an admixture; providing a thermal zone heated by means of solar energy; and placing the admixture in the thermal zone for a time sufficient to cause the silica and carbon to react to form silicon carbide.
