The increased use of corrosion resistant alloys (CRAs), especially in high rate gas wells, has raised the question of whether the erosion-corrosion resistance of these tubulars would be higher than for carbon steel API grade tubulars. If the critical erosion velocity for CRAs was higher than for carbon steel, than the economics of CRA completions are greatly enhanced. The author discusses how the C factor for any CRA should be predictable once the specific corrosion films are identified for a particular environment. If the specific composition of corrosion products that form on CRA tubulars is known, the C factor and thus the critical erosion velocity can be calculated for a well environment.
