Representation and reasoning issues in expert systems

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6977920
This paper describes several methods of representation and reasoning that are useful for specific types of problems. Most of the examples have come from the authors' practical experiences in education and consulting. It is their intent to use these case studies as a ''window'' through which to view the underlying implementation method, thereby giving the reader an appreciation for the importance of choosing appropriate representation and reasoning methods. The paper culminates with a table that relates problem characteristics to appropriate reasoning and/or representation techniques.
