Motor-driven fuel pump

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6977268
A motor-driven fuel pump is described for use in a fuel tank to pump liquid fuel from the fuel tank through a pressure regulator and an injector into an internal combustion engine. The fuel pump includes: an electric motor; a pump housing adapted to be disposed in the fuel tank and defining a pump chamber provided with a fuel inlet and a fuel outlet; an impeller rotatably disposed in the pump chamber and drivingly connected to the electric motor to suck the fuel through the fuel inlet into the pump chamber and discharge the fuel through the fuel outlet; means defining a fuel discharge passage in a part of the pump housing extending in fluid-flow communication with the pump chamber outlet; a check valve disposed in the fuel discharge passage to prevent backward flow of the fuel toward the pump chamber outlet; and overflow means operative to allow a part of the fuel in the fuel discharge passage upstream of the check valve to overflow back into the fuel tank at a controlled rate.
