Influence of nonstoichiometry on the magnetic properties of Pr/sub 2/NiO/sub 4/ and Nd/sub 2/NiO/sub 4/

Journal Article · · J. Solid State Chem.; (United States)

Magnetic susceptibility measurements are reported on single-crystal specimens of Pr/sub 2/NiO/sub 4+delta/ and Nd/sub 2/NiO/sub 4+delta/ as a function of oxygen nonstoichiometry, delta. Although only minor deviations from the Curie-Weiss law are observed for severely nonstoichiometric samples, both Pr/sub 2/NiO/sub 4+delta/ and Nd/sub 2/NiO/sub 4+delta/ exhibit evidence of long-range magnetic order as delta becomes small. Nd/sub 2/NiO/sub 4+delta/ decomposes to form Nd/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and NiO under sufficiently reducing conditions.
