Preparation and X-ray crystal structure of K[Nd(O-2,6-i-Pr[sub 2]C[sub 6]H[sub 3])[sub 4]]: A one-dimensional chain of lanthanide aryloxide anions joined by bis([eta][sup 6]-arene)-potassium interactions

Reaction of NdCl[sub 3] with 3 equiv of potassium 2,6-diisopropylphenoxide in THF solution forms the salt K[Nd(O-2,6-i-Pr[sub 2]C[sub 6]H[sub 3])[sub 4]]. The [Nd(OAr)[sub 4][sup [minus]]] anion is pseudotetrahedral, while the potassium cation displays a novel bis([eta][sup 6]-arene) interaction with the arene rings of aryloxide ligands of adjacent anions, thereby forming a quasi-one-dimensional infinite chain structure. This example of a lanthanide infinite chain structure based upon a bis([eta][sup 6]-arene)-alkali-metal interaction appears to be without precedent.
