Reservoir applications of dipmeter logs

Reservoir quality indicators can be derived from the analysis of high-resolution dipmeter records. Changes in the aspect of the dipmeter curves primarily respond to changes in rock texture and sedimentary structure; their analysis can be instrumental in describing the petrophysical and reservoir properties of the formations. A four-step methodology has been set up as follows: 1. extract dipmeter curve attributes, such as curve activity and density of correlated events, and introduce them in a simple texture model; 2. combine dipmeter-derived data with a porosity log, using a clustering technique to recognize zones of similar texture; 3. compare with core data (e.g. grain size, permeability) over key intervals; and 4. extrapolate to other intervals and other wells. This approach is illustrated by three examples. The first example is a siliciclastic turbidite with very thin-though commercially producible-sandstones interlaminated with shales. A constant tortuosity exponent ''m'' would have lead to an overpessimistic evaluation of hydrocarbon in place over these intervals. A zonation of ''m'' as a function of the dipmeter-derived texture indicator yields more correct saturation estimates. Furthermore, the shot density is optimized in front of these bed intervals, since the performance of perforations relates to the distribution of shales. The second example, a marine fan, has wide textural variations - from coarse conglomerate to fine, well-sorted sands - in spite of an almost constant mineralogical composition. High permeability contrasts do exist between layers. The texture variations predicted from dipmeter indicators along with log porosity agree extremely well with the core-derived grain-size profile.
