Luminescence of the Sb/sup 3 +/ ion in Ln(PO/sub 3/)/sub 3/ (Ln = Sc, Lu, Y, Gd, La)

Journal Article · · J. Solid State Chem.; (United States)

The efficient luminescence of the 5s/sup 2/ ion Sb/sup 3 +/ in Ln(PO/sub 3/)/sub 3/ (Ln = Sc, Lu, Y, Gd, La) is reported. The compounds Ln(PO/sub 3/)/sub 3/ (Ln = Sc, Lu, Y, Gd) adopt the Yb(PO/sub 3/)/sub 3/ structure in which four slightly different octahedral sites are available for the trivalent cation, while La(PO/sub 3/)/sub 3/ has the Nd(PO/sub 3/)/sub 3/ structure in which only one position with eight coordination is available for the cation. The emission and excitation spectra of La(PO/sub 3/)/sub 3/-Sb/sup 3 +/ (Ln = Sc, Lu, Gd) show broad bands, caused by the strongly overlapping bands of the four Sb/sup 3 +/ centers. The spectra and decay time measurements show that the differences in luminescence of characteristics between the four Sb/sup 3 +/ centers become more apparent with decreasing radius of the host lattice cation. The luminescence properties of Y(PO/sub 3/)/sub 3/-Sb/sup 3 +/ are rather complex and lead to the conclusion that the relaxed excited state of some of the Sb/sup 3 +/ centers is distorted by a Jahn-Teller effect. The luminescence of La(PO/sub 3/)/sub 3/-Sb/sup 3 +/ originates from one Sb/sup 3 +/ center and can be described by usual models.
