Simultaneous second derivative spectrophotometric determination of manganese and copper

Journal Article · · Analytical Letters; (United States)

A sensitive, rapid and specific method is proposed for the simultaneous determination of manganese and copper in drinking water samples based on their reactions with sodium diethyldithiocarbamate. The method allows the determination of 17.0-150.0 {mu}g L{sup {minus}1} of manganese and 14.0-175.0 {mu}g L{sup {minus}1} of copper in mixtures for which 10 {ge} (Cu)/(Mn) {ge} 0.09 and it has been applied to their determination in drinking water. The sample is extracted into methyl isobutyl ketone -MIBK- in weakly acidic medium prior to instrumental determination. The overlapping of conventional UV-vis spectra is resolved using second-derivative spectrometry.
