The absorption of Cs/sup +/ ions by the phosphate Mg/sub 3/(PO/sub 4/)/sub 2/ x 22H/sub 2/O is accompanied by a change in its structure and two solid phases coexist in the sorption products over an appreciable range of degrees of saturation. The sorption of Cs/sup +/ ions by the phosphate NH/sub 4/MgPO/sub 4/ x 6H/sub 2/O is due to the formation of a solid substitution solution based on the struvite phase and is not accompanied by a change in the number of phases in the system. The dissimilar nature of the change in the phase composition of the products from the sorption of Cs/sup +/ ions by magnesium phosphates leads to a difference in the types of sorption isotherms representing the corresponding sorption processes.
