On the basis of mineral and geologic surveys in 1981-1982, it was concluded that Bell Star East and West Roadless Areas, Arkansas, have inferred resources of coal in areas of substantiated coal resource potential from the Lower Hartshorne coal bed at depths of 2000 to 4000 ft below the surface. These areas also have a probable potential for natural gas from the Atoka and Hall Formations at depths as much as 6000 ft below the surface.
