The interaction of carbon monoxide with aluminum has been characterized in infrared, ESR, chemiluminescence, and EELS studies. Our findings that organoaluminum compounds markedly attenuate the carbonylation of organomagnesium and organolithium reagents have prompted us to study the reaction between trimethylaluminum (TMA) and CO at 15-35 K. The authors have examined the infrared spectrum of the species formed upon cocondensation of trimethylaluminum and carbon monoxide in argon matrices. The data are consistent with the formation of a weakly bound complex (CH{sub 3}){sub 3}Al{l arrow}CO.
