This paper examines the physical and chemical analysis of the LnTe-Sb/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ system. The physical properties of these homogeneous phases is of interest inasmuch as antimony telluride and solid solutions based on it are prospective semiconducting materials. The authors present a study which shows that the value of the energy gap changes with the content of NdTe and GdTe in Sb/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ from ca 0.2 eV for SbTe/sub 3/ to 0;65 and 0.75 eV for solid solutions containing 5 mole % neodynium or gadolinium telluride. The thermo-emf increases from 300 to approximately 600 K, but decreases for T not less than 600-650 K, which is associated with a complex band structure, characteristic of Sb/sub 2/Te/sub 3/.
