Algebraic treatment of giant dipole resonances built on excited states

An algebraic method for the description of giant dipole resonances built on discrete excited states of both spherical and deformed nuclei is presented within the framework of the interacting boson model. Applications to lanthanide and actinide isotopes are discussed and the effect of {gamma} deformation is also investigated.
