The Green Bay Metropolitan Sewage District provides activated sludge treatment for combined municipal and industrial wastes, the latter primarily from sulfite pulping operations. Primary sludge is degritted and thickened, then mixed with air-flotation-thickened waste activated sludge. Sodium hydroxide is added to thickened sludge, which is then thermally conditioned and concentrated and vacuum filtered. Filter cake is incinerated. Stress corrosion in the thermal conditioning unit was a problem because of high chloride levels in sludge and low pH. Increased rates of caustic feed alleviated corrosion, but adversely affected the filterability of the sludge. Effluent biochemical oxygen demand, suspended solids, and phosphorus have all been brought within federal limits by improved operation over the initial two years.
