The adsorption of O{sub 2}, NO, N{sub 2}O, and D{sub 2}O on polycrystalline gadolinium foil at 300 K was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. At 300 K O{sub 2}, NO, N{sub 2}O and D{sub 2}O were found to adsorb dissociatively. For O{sub 2}, NO, and N{sub 2}O, the oxide O(1s) peak was observed at a binding energy of around 530.5 eV. For D{sub 2}O, peaks at 530.4 and 532.6 eV were found. The lower binding energy peak was assigned to the oxygen in Gd{sub 2}O{sub 3}, while the higher binding energy peak was attributed to hydroxide formation.
